However, in 1938 the De Beers company began a campaign to boost the sales of diamonds. And in 1947, the company came up with the slogan “a diamond is forever.” This famous slogan cemented the tradition of buying diamond engagement rings. Fast forward to the recession of 1990, Tiffany started a campaign about how affordable Tiffany diamond rings are. The company would send out a “How to Buy a Diamond” brochure to people to market its engagement rings. Tiffany’s engagement rings also made it to pop culture appearances. It would appear in movies, where a newly engaged woman would show off her ring, and a friend would ask if it’s a Tiffany ring. It also earned its place on the iPhone’s list of emojis, where newly engaged couples use it as a part of their engagement announcement.
