10 Things Nobody Told You About the Atomic Bomb

A single drop of the atomic bomb could wipe out tens of thousands of human beings off the planet. If you have heard about the bombing of the Japanese cities Nagasaki and Hiroshima, you probably have an idea how deadly this weapon of mass destruction is. These two bombings in 1945 were two of the most heartbreaking events in all history, but there were less talked about events related to the atomic bomb. You can find out more about them if you include a visit to the National Atomic Testing Museum in one of you group activities Las Vegas. But for now, here are some teasers about the things nobody was brave enough to tell you about the atomic bomb:

The Countries that Made Them

  • The United States was the first to test an atomic bomb on July 16, 1945.
  • Other countries came next, including the Union in 1949, the United Kingdom in 1952, France in 1960, China in 1964, India in 1974, and Pakistan in 1998.

The Atomic Bomb in Numbers

  • There are more or less 26,000 nuclear weapons all over the world that could launch at any moment.
  • The United States and Russia own the most number of nuclear weapons, making up 95% of the total number. The remaining 5% is owned by 5 other countries.
  • About 67,000 units of nuclear missiles were developed by the United States since 1951.
  • A compound called Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) is needed to make nuclear weapons. The total global reservoir of HEU could produce billions of nuclear weapons. Group activities Las Vegas at the National Atomic Testing Museum can help you understand the manufacturing process better.
  • The US paid the Marshallese Islanders $759 million for their exposure to the elements of nuclear weapons.
  • The United Nations Atomic Energy Commission was created to stop the use of nuclear weapons. It obviously was ineffective as Russia and the US are still in an arms race even today.
  • “Little Boy,” the bomb dropped on Hiroshima weighed 13 tons.
  • The “Fat Man” was dropped on Nagasaki. It weighed 22 tons.
